On this stage, you will ride around 40 kilometers. Lots of small highlights await history buffs and nature lovers, such as the excavations of an early Christian church outside Molzbichl in the lower Drautal valley, the "Carantana" museum and Villach’s most popular mountain, the Dobratsch, located in a nature park of the same name. Hot springs in Villach guarantee that even those with flagging spirits will quickly feel rejuvenated. In summer 2012, Carinthia’s new Therme Warmbad-Villach will be opened, Austria’s most modern spa & aquatic experience. From Spittal, the Alpe-Adria Bike Tour takes us along the Drau Bike Path, which is well developed and clearly marked. For most of this stage, our route keeps right on the banks of the river.

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting point for this stage is Schloss Porcia. Pedaling through the town park, we come to the railway station, where we follow signs for the Drau Bike Tour or the Alpe Adria Bike Tour. After Spittal, we continue via St. Peter to Molzbichl, site of the Carantana museum. At this point, we cross below the Tauern Autobahn and, just before Mautbrücken, find ourselves directly next to the Drau again, which we follow along the river embankment as far as Paternion. As of Mauthbrücken, our paved surface gradually transitions into fine gravel, still easy to ride on, a surface which continues, except for a few short sections, until just outside Villach.

At the Paternion power station, we cross the Drau and ride the next 12 km to Gummern on the south side of the river. The Drau now begins to make broad, meandering loops, which our route follows. In Töplitsch, the bike route again switches to the left side of the Drau and, shortly after the Villach power station, we reach the city of Villach itself. With a population of 58,000, this is the second-largest city in Carinthia after Klagenfurt.

The bike path into Villach is paved once more, and continues to run along the banks of the Drau, making it also a popular excursion destination for the locals. The city of Villach is famous for its vibrant lifestyle, including its Fasching celebrations and the Villach fair.   The main square, a traffic-free area, the Stadtpfarrturm tower, its many cafes and restaurants – generally with a southern flair – are rewarding sightseeing attractions and watering holes.

As of summer 2012, Carinthia’s new Therme Warmbad-Villach will be (re)opened. After new construction and remodeling lasting around two years, it is about to become Austria’s most modern spa & aquatic world. Based on its three pillars – memorable experiences, wellness and fitness – it will draw daytime visitors from surrounding regions of Carinthia, Slovenia and Italy, presenting yet another attractive highlight for visitors to Carinthia.
