the blue gentian flowers from May to July. The gentian used to flavour schnapps is not this species but the rarer Great Yellow Gentian (Gentiana lutea). You may find a garnet during the walk. Garnet is a dark red semi-precious stone.

Author’s recommendation

you can enjoy dairy products freshly made at Lammersdorf hut and the filling “Hüttenpfandl” made with speck, eggs and bread. The manager of the refuge will guide you round the hut and will play a special instrument to bring good cheer to all.

Turn-by-turn directions

this circular route goes to the cross at Lammersdorfer Alm hut (1900 m) and Höhenbrunn rest area before climbing up to Stana-Mandl (2063 m). Sprinkled with garnet, the path continues almost flat up to the peak Obermillstätter Almkreuz (2046
m), then descends through pastures and on a forest road past the Ortner refuge (1900 m, not managed) before returning to the start point. For children: “Almbrunn’ Steig” path (ca. 2.30-3 hrs).
This follows the first stretch of the Gentian and Garnet Path (Enzian-Granat-Steig) and from Lammersdorf hut climbs to “Stana Mandl”. Eight stations along the way illustrate the importance of water in the life of the shepherd’s hut.
