The Gartnerkofel is one of the three prominent mountain peaks of the Carinthian Nassfeld and a beautiful mountain tour for the whole family. Starting at the top station of the Gartnerkofel chairlift, the Gartnerkofel hike is an easy summit tour. The ascent runs in a pleasant, even gradient partly over the slopes of the ski area. The last stretch to the summit cross requires a bit of fitness and a head for heights. However, there are no really exposed parts along the entire way.

Alternatively you can start at the state border at the Nassfeldpass or at the Watschiger Alm.

Author’s recommendation

On the Thörl before the last ascent towards the summit, take a look down into the valley, the extra steps are worth it! Also to recommend: The sunrise hike to the Gartnerkofel (Tour ID 11807364)!

Gartnerkofel-Gipfel

Turn-by-turn directions

There are three possible starting points for the hike to the Gartnerkofel:

1. state border on the Nassfeldpass

2nd Watschiger Alm (Wulfenia occurrence, flowering period May-June)

3. top station Gartnerkofel chairlift (described below)

Ascension:

Take the Gartnerkofel chairlift to 1,900 m above sea level. Here you will find wonderful hiking trails and a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and the neighbouring Julian Alps. From here you can easily reach the summit of the Gartnerkofel in 40 minutes walking time. The easy and well-marked hiking trail initially leads over part of the FIS downhill run to the top station of the FIS lift. From here it goes slightly right into the Gartnerkofel massif. On the left summit you can see the summit cross in good visibility. Follow the marked path to the Thörl, from where there is a magnificent view of the Gailtal, Hermagor and Lake Pressegger. Now turn left, the last ascent follows, which leads in serpentines to the summit. This stretch demands a last time a good amount of fitness, but it is worth it: because at the summit cross there is a fantastic panoramic view and a worthwhile rest.

The descent is the same as the ascent.

After the descent the buffet "Zur Berghex", the Watschiger Alm as well as the Alpenhof Plattner tempt you to stop for a break.
