Botany tip: Cottongrass

Cottongrass is found on the banks of high Alpine lakes and in the silt around small pools. After withering, long, snow-white hairs grow from the green leaves, which are attached to little seed heads. In the past, the fluffy hairs were used for stuffing pillows and cleansing wounds (like cotton wadding).

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Erlacherhaus mountain hut, follow the road for a short distance in the direction of the Erlacher Bockhütte. After about 10 minutes, leave the road and pick up Trail no. 122, following it along the brook to lower Bocksattel, where there you can enjoy a beautiful view of the upland moor to the west. Passing through the mountain pines, join Trail no. 14 towards the Pfannsee lakes. The path continues somewhat more steeply uphill to the Pfannock peak, where tired hikers are rewarded with a spectacular view of the Predigerstuhl summit. Following Trail no. 14, you will reach the Erlacher Bocksattel, where traces of ore mining are still visible. The path leads on past the Erlacher Bockhütte, directly to the finishing point. The ascent for this route is also possible with the Brunnach National Park cable car – free if you have a Kärnten Card.

By road

By car to Radenthein and Kaning and through the valley Langalmtal directly to the Alpin hut Erlacherhaus.
