From Schladming-Rohrmoos, this stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" leads right into the heart of the Schladminger Tauern to the Giglachseen lakes. The tour is made easier by the ascent with the Hochwurzen summit cable car from Rohrmoos to the Hochwurzenhütte (the ascent is free with the Sommercard!). The destination of the tour are the Giglachseen with the Ignaz Mattis Hut and as an alternative, a few hundred meters west of this, the Giglachseehütte. The two mountain lakes, the Upper Giglachsee and its much larger neighbor, the Lower Giglachsee are located at the foot of the Lungauer Kalkspitze and the Steirische Kalkspitze in the middle of the Tauern.

The Schladminger Tauern are not only one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the alpine region, but also surprise with tremendous treasures underground, which had high economic importance for the former mining town Schladming for centuries. In the Bromriesen, in Roßblei, in the Duisitzkar, on the Eschachalm, the Neualm, in Krombach and on the Krahbergzinken, copper, silver, lead, zinc, cobalt and nickel were mined. Especially the extraction of silver ores made Schladming one of the most important mining towns in Austria from the late 13th to the 15th century. Today we can follow in the footsteps of the miners in the Bromriesen gallery. When you explore the Bromriesen gallery on a guided tour, you feel like you're in an exciting adventure movie, where you become the main character in the glow of the lamps. The guides will show you how much the population depended on nature and how difficult and dangerous it was for the miners to earn their living.

Author’s recommendation

Stay overnight in Schladming or Rohrmoos in a business that is a Sommercard business. By staying overnight, you receive the Sommercard, with which you can take the ascent with the Gipfelbahn Hochwurzen free of charge.

Tip: In the spring of 2018, in the course of a casting, a jury and the readers of a major Austrian daily newspaper chose Martina Traisch from the Enns Valley and Manfred Polansky from the Mürz Valley as 2 "super hikers" who hiked the north and south routes in the summer. You can read about their experiences and adventures at www.steiermark.com/superwanderer: From ideal photo spots to hidden wine cellars in mountain huts. Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Martina and Manfred and also become a "super hiker"? It's easy: Register at www.steiermark.com/superwanderer and then post your experiences, videos and comments along the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" - regardless of whether you hike the entire route or just one section. Every 5 stages also beckons a small reward!

Turn-by-turn directions

At the beginning we hike on this stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" to the valley station of the summit cable car Hochwurzen, which brings us within a few minutes with a magnificent view of the Dachstein massif on the Hochwurzen. The rest of the way leads us to a ridge, which we follow until we reach the Giglachseen lakes. The first peak that greets us is the Rossfeld at an altitude of 1,919 m above sea level. The next stop on our journey into the Tauern is the Guschen at 1,982 m above sea level, whose summit is certainly one of the most beautiful viewpoints along the tour.

The rest of the way takes us to over 2,000 meters above sea level with the peaks of the Schneider, Hochfeld (with the distinctive Hochfeldmandl) and Schiedeck before we head east past the Kampspitze and Brettersee to descend to the Ignaz Mattis Hut (Tel. 43 664 4233823) at Unterer Giglachsee. As an alternative to the Ignaz Mattis Hut, the Giglachsee Hut (tel. 43 664 9088188) is also available for overnight stays. Tip: we get tips and a weather forecast for the next few days from the hut keepers, such as for the next stage to the Keinprechthütte.
