A beautiful high alpine tour that takes us to the Sölktäler Nature Park in the middle of the Niedere Tauern. At the beginning, alpine climbs await us, which also require surefootedness, before we reach the Putzentalalm in the second part of this stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" downhill.

The Putzentalalm is one of the most beautiful places in the Sölktäler Nature Park and offers 8 beds and 10 campsites as overnight accommodation. Many of the 25 alpine pastures in the Sölktäler Nature Park, which offer both accommodation and hospitality, are still traditionally managed today. Cows, sheep and goats live here freely on flowering alpine meadows. The quality and taste of the regional products testify to this. Also at our stage destination, the Putzentalalm, alpine specialties of the finest are offered: Butter, milk, buttermilk, cheese, bacon, our own bread or, of course, homemade pastries. A special tip: a family-friendly hiking trail, which is also passable with strollers, leads from the neighboring Schwarzensee directly to the alp, which is also the starting point for many other hikes.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Preintalerhütte (Tel. +43 664 1448881) we first return a short distance on the last section of the 6th stage of the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine". After the ascent through the Äußere Lämmerkar we reach a crossroads, which leads us to the right again into the Klafferkessel, but we keep to the left to reach the Kapuzinersee at the border to Salzburg. We cross this border at the Waldhorntörl at 2,283 m above sea level and then descend to the Zwerfenbergsee, which lies beautifully in a hollow in the middle of the Tauern. From here we go uphill again to the Kaiserscharte at 2,298 m above sea level - the highest point of our stage - and return to Styria.

The rest of the way leads us straight into the wooded landscape around the idyllically situated Putzentalalm (Tel. +43 664 9262200), our destination for today's stage. Important note: please be sure to reserve overnight accommodation in advance, as there is only a limited number of beds and camp sleeping places available!

If time and fitness permit, we should walk out of the valley to Schwarzensse, one of the most romantic places and most popular photo spots in the Sölktäler Nature Park. Back at the Putezntalalm we enjoy the culinary delights and plan our next stage, which will take us to the mountaineering village of Krakau on the southern slope of the Schladminger Tauern.

Equipment

Proper backpack packing makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within reach in a side pocket. All the things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress in layers.
