Circular ST1 AAT: Faaker See / Baumgartnerhöhe - Warmbad
After we have started this circular tour with a view of the turquoise Lake Faaker See, the route leads via the small village of Faak through the Faaker Moor and along the idyllic wooded landscape of Dobrova. The destination is Warmbad-Villach with its newly opened Kärnten Therme, which promises spa enjoyment and fun on the waterslides.

The starting point for this stage is high above the iridescent turquoise Lake Faaker See, the fifth largest lake in Carinthia. The route leads past the ruined Finkenstein Castle, which stands on a cliff that drops steeply southwards at the foot of the Karawanken, and continues on to Faak am See. This well known tourist spot lies adjacent to the Faaker Moor with its brightly coloured and varied flora and fauna, and nestles between the Villach Basin and the Rosental Valley. The route continues through the idyllic wooded landscape of Dobrova to the 122 km long River Gail, one of the two large rivers which flow through Villach. After a short stretch along the Gail, the trail leads to Warmbad. This part of Villach has always been known for its thermal waters and is also the home of the Kärnten Therme, which was newly opened in 2012. Architecturally the thermal spa borrows from the appearance of the Dobratsch Nature Park, and with its attractive pools, saunas and beauty landscape it offers perfect relaxation after a day’s hiking.

Turn-by-turn directions
From the Baumgartnerhöhe this time the trail leads us downhill to Altfinkenstein and from there in the direction of the small village of Pogöriach. From here we follow the road to Faak am See, with our eyes constantly turned towards the Gerlitzen. In the centre of Faak we turn off left onto the Sankt Stefaner Weg trail and follow this until we come to a country lane through the Faaker Moor. This leads straight on to Höfling, where we take the Höflingerstraße road to the church square in St. Stefan (a district of Finkenstein). Here we turn right and follow the Villacher Straße as far as the wayside cross, which we walk past on the left. The road becomes a farm track, which we follow to the edge of the wood. Here the trail branches off towards Müllnern and leads right through the attractive deciduous forest. After we have gone through Müllnern in a westerly direction, we come to the bridge over the River Gail. Immediately after crossing the bridge we turn off right and follow the trail alongside the Gail. After we have gone under the motorway bridge, the river bends to the right – here the trail bends to the left towards Warmbad. After a short wooded stretch we again come to open fields and we keep to the left until we come to the Zillerbad. From there we continue to follow the Warmbachweg trail until it ends. Then we can see the destination point of this stage on our right, the new Kärnten Therme in Warmbad-Villach.
