Dolomiti senza confini: 2 countries - 9 stages - 12 via ferratas - 17 refuges - 108 kilometers
Very long stage directly along the Carnic high route with breath-taking views.
difficult
Distance 20.4 km
This stage impresses with its length of over 20km, which is almost the distance of a half marathon. Technically, this stage is easy and you can complete the whole path almost without safety ropes. Many of the suspended stretches do, however require surefootedness and concentration. Until Sella dei Frugnoni the route is largely directly along the border. One way of making the stage a little shorter would be an additional overnight stay on the hut Obstanserseehütte or on Malga Coltrondo. If you would like to hike to Passo Monte Croce, the path is 3km and 300m elevation gain shorter.

Turn-by-turn directions
From the hut Filmoor-Standschützenhütte you continue in a westward direction to past the southern slopes of Monte Cavallino until you reach the col between Monte Cavallino and Monte Cavalatto (2515m). The slopes covered in coarse gravel require surefootedness. You can walk around the southern side of Monte Cavalatto and save some 50m elevation gain, if you don’t want to climb to the summit. The path continues for approx. 50m altitude differential downhill and then along the ridge slightly uphill to Monte Fana (2678m). This is also the highest point on today’s stage. From Monte Fana the route continues downhill to Forcella Pala degli Orti and then again uphill to Sella del Frugnoni. - 4 hrs.
Then down to the col of Monte Quaternà and on path 148 eastward past Monte Quaternà. Just beyond Sella del Quaternà is the turn-off to path 173 that merges into a wide forestry path. Follow this westward to Rifugio Rinfreddo and on via Malga Coltrondo to Passo Monte Croce. -2.5 hrs.
If from Passo Monte Croce you also want to continue the path to Rifugio Lunelli, follow path 124 to just below the Cima dei Colosei (turn-off at 1942m) and descend to the Rifugio Lunelli. - 1 hr.
Total 7.5 hrs.
