ATTENTION: For the hiking season 2019 there is a diversion from Stall to the Goldberghütte due to avalanches and the associated wind throw. The detour route via Steinwand and Sagas to the Goldberghütte is signposted and maintained in the outdooractive tour guide!

A varied stage with great views awaits us far above the central Möll Valley: old footpaths to mountain farms, a historic school path, some newer forest roads and, as the highlight of the stage, the legendary “mine track” from the times of copper mining.

In many respects this stage is like a journey through time: right at the beginning of this stage we walk to the ruins of former Wildegg Castle above Stall. The further ascent to the Sonnberg gives us some idea of what going shopping or to church in the valley once meant for the mountain farmers. Those who assume that the former primary school on the Sonnberg, at an altitude of approx. 1.500 metres, is a relic from long ago are wrong: children were taught here until 2002.

The further route to the Goldberghütte hut could bear the title “alpine farming now and then” – many of the alpine pastures are still used today! However, copper mining in the Innerfragant region came to a standstill long ago. In earlier centuries the ore was transported away from here by horse drawn railway (!), which is why today we can enjoy the completely flat hiking path of the “mine track”.

Turn-by-turn directions

You start in Stall in Mölltal and initially follow a short way of the cross. Where this turns to the left, you go straight ahead and you reach the asphalt road again, which you follow for two bends until you come out of the forest onto light mountain meadows.

Here you branch off to the left and mostly follow the old mountain path, which - sometimes a little steep - cuts off the bends of the new road. If you like it a little flatter, you can of course also use the road. But we recommend the footpath, which gives you an impression of the troubles of the former mountain farmer's life. At around 1,400 meters above sea level, the terrain slopes back a little and the previously fairly direct footpath crosses the forest slope to the right and finally reaches the former Steinwand elementary school, where the children were taught in a class well into the 21st century! Here you can also enjoy the view of the “Untere Mölltal” for the first time on this stage and you can already see prominent points of our next stage such as Staneralm and Himmelbauer.

Right above the school you will reach the Zraunig homestead, the highest farmer on the Sonnberg. You now follow the forest path that begins here. After approx. 30 minutes you can reach the serviced Bodenhütte with a small detour (approx. 15 minutes and back). Your path leads, however, with a slight gradient, even a little downhill for a short time, to the private Bergerhütte near the Klenitzenbach.

The forest path that you have followed since the Zraunig homestead ends here, and you continue on a small path for a few minutes before you reach a forest path again, which you follow to the Sagaser Almen. Here you can enjoy wonderful views of the Reisseck group and the towering "Tauernkönigin" Hochalmspitze (3,360 m). Even after the Sagaser Almhütten you stay on the forest path (marked as a diversion) until you reach the managed Goldberghütte. The simple but very well maintained hut is worth a visit!

A beautiful walk through forest and later on a long walk highend rhe mountainbike with a lot of beautiful overlooking sights. The best trail till now. The Goldberghuette was a small familyhome where you can getsome coffee and cake. The trail at the end, to Innerfragant, was hard and took very long. Over all a very long walk. We started at 7.53 in Stall and ended at 17.20. We took 4 breaks.
