This stage of the trail is like taking a trip back to the “good old days”. At first the trail leads downhill from Innerfragant to the Möll Valley. Then after a longer ascent to the Staneralm Alpine pasture, the crowning glory of this stage awaits you in the form of a crossing with many beautiful views as we head towards Mallnitz, the Alpine pearl of the National Park!

Over the centuries, mountain farming during the summertime has left its mark on the Alpine cultural landscape of the Möll Valley. But there have also been and still are farms here which are inhabited all year round and are situated at a substantial altitude, far above the valley floor. Today if you visit the Himmelbauer, an idyllic Alpine guesthouse on the route from Flattach to Mallnitz, you can only guess what privations must once have existed for the inhabitants with no access road and no car to reach the valley, or how difficult it must have been for the children to get to school. Life on a remote Alpine mountain farm probably had very little in common with our romantic image of Alpine mountain lodges. And yet when we visit a farm like this today, we still long for the “good old days”.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Innerfragant we first follow the road towards the Möll Valley for about 2 kilometres, descending gently all the time. At the point where the road begins to ascend again we turn off right onto a gravel path. We follow this, almost on the flat to start with and latterly ascending somewhat, to the Laas mountain hamlet. From here we descend via several hairpin bends into the Möll Valley, which we reach at Außerfragant. We walk just briefly along the main road, and after just a few metres we turn left off the road and walk uphill in the little village of Kleindorf until the first left-hand bend. Immediately after this bend we turn right towards the Flattachberg.

At an altitude of around 1,200 metres we take a left turn off the asphalt road and follow the signposts for the “Staneralm”. Partly on a forest road and partly cutting off the bends via footpaths we ascend through the forest until finally, already close to the Staneralm, the view opens up across wide stretches of Carinthia as far as the Karawanken. The striking Mittagskogel can clearly be identified! Further stretches of the Alpe Adria Trail can at least be anticipated from here. With just a few minutes’ more effort we could reach the Bschellnighütte mountain lodge, which is open for part of the year. However, our route leads us downhill, past the old “Staner houses”, some of which have been modernised, as far as the Himmelbauer Alpine guesthouse, an inviting place to stop for a bite to eat. The view from the terrace is unparalleled!

From here, to conclude a fairly long stage, the crossing to Mallnitz awaits us. This firstly runs towards the village of Lassach, mostly descending slightly. If you want to spare yourself the final (minor) ascent to Mallnitz, you can opt for the bus here. Our route leads into the forest on the left-hand side (in terms of the ascent) and upwards along the road to Mallnitz, and finally through Alpine meadow landscape we reach the Rabisch district of Mallnitz. From here we hike almost on the flat through a carefully tended rural cultural landscape until we come right into the centre of the “mountaineers’ village” of Mallnitz.

We decided to do the walk till Himmelbauer because we were tired, and to be sure we feel fine when coming to next accomodation. The beginning us soft and easy, after 2,5 hours there was a hard climb up hill, with less shades. Therefore it was tough. Himmelbauer took all our problems away and had a nice rest.

Nice stage...long and varied. I would rate it a little less than difficult. We got rained on half the time on the uphill to Mallnitz. There are some beautiful villages and Gasthauses along the way.
