ST10 AAT: Hühnersberg - Gmünd
Attention: The route is currently only possible via the ALTERNATIVE ROUTE - the Drachenschlucht suspension bridge is closed until the end of May 2022!!!
******************************************************************************************************************************************
The stage takes us from Hühnersberg in pleasant rural tranquillity to the mountain village of Altersberg and on via the spectacular suspension bridge Drachenschlucht (open from the beginning of June to mid-September) to the award-winning artists' town of Gmünd, whose liveliness causes culture lovers in particular to be amazed.
This stage leads, on largely traffic-free routes with no climbs, to Gmünd, the Artists’ Town.
From the start point you hike via the parishes of Hintereggen and Zelsach to Altersberg. The small village of Altersberg is at 940m above sea level. Here you can look round the small, elongated Filialkirche St. Lucia, mentioned for the first time in 1513. The present-day appearance is mostly from the 18th century. ”Altersberger Augenwasser" water is widely known for its healing properties for diseases of the eye. It emerges as a trickle of water that comes up in the church. (Access to the church is only possible on request)
At the "Allesbauer" (Prize-winning family-run place to eat) in Altersberg you can have a short break.
From Neuschitz you go on Gmünd, the Artists’ Town.
As an outstanding European travel destination, recognised with the EDEN 2011 European Tourism Prize and wonderfully located at the point of intersection of the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Nockberge Biosphere Park, Gmünd, the Artists’ Town in Carinthia offers an unusually wide range of cultural amenities, with the emphasis on visual arts and various handicrafts: exhibitions, museums, sculpture gardens, artists’ studios and numerous galleries make art and culture become an experience for every age and every taste. The liveliness of this small town will enthral you.
Places of interest in Gmünd: medieval town centre with town gates, town wall, town tower, Alte Burg, Kalvarienbergkirche, Schloss Lodron with the Porsche Park, Mariä Himmelfahrt parish church with the gothic ossuary, the Divided Church, Pankratium Gmünd “House of Amazement“, Porsche Car Musuem, and much more.
