After your visit to the artists’ town of Gmünd you can look forward to a comfortable hike to Sommeregg Castle in Treffling above Lake Millstätter See, the second largest lake in Carinthia .

Families here have the magical valley of baby and children’s hotels at their feet. Welcome to a region where families enjoy royal treatment as guests! No other holiday region is so consistently focussed on families. With fun, games and adventure in the unspoiled nature and a wealth of destinations, everything revolves around children, although grandparents are also welcomed as part of the big patchwork family. So Europe ’s first baby village Trebesing offers all kinds of entertainment.

Culture vultures can look forward to the artists’ town of Gmünd in the centre of the region: This excellently preserved medieval town has always been the intersection point for different cultures, and it is now one of the liveliest and most varied small towns in Austria with art and culture at every step of the way. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the old town, which functions as a stage for all the arts.

Sporty types are well looked after thanks to the location amidst two National Parks. This region forms the eastern gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park , the largest protected area in central Europe . The breathtaking landscape around the 3,000-metre-high Hochalmspitze, Hafner and Ankogel forms a striking backdrop for numerous adventures and activities. The Nockberge National Park is one of the most beautiful and enchanting hiking regions in Austria .

After your hike you will reach your destination, the ruined Sommeregg Castle with Europe ’s largest museum on the theme of torture. Here you can immerse yourself in the life of the 13th century, with minnesong concerts, medieval banquets and tournaments. Along the way there is also the opportunity to look round the church in Unterhaus.

Destination

Klingerpark - Seeboden am Millstätter See

Turn-by-turn directions

We start our hike in the Untere Vorstadt or lower suburb of Gmünd, or else on its main square. At Schloss Lodron we turn right towards the Evangelische Kirche. We hike on over the Moosratte to the Treffling road. It’s now on through the motorway underpass to the Landfraß village sign. After we have crossed the road, go over a bridge and through Landfraß. We hike on through the small hamlet of Moos to the last house. Now comes a short rise, along the fir wood to the crossroads. It’s a pleasant hike above the River Lieser on the alpine plateau along forest and meadow tracks to Kolm and on to Bauer Lagger (commonly known as Thomele).

We walk on along a picturesque hiking trail into the settlement of Treffling and on to Burg Sommeregg. Here we have the option of stopping for a rest and looking round the fortress and the museum of torture (jousting also in August).

From Burg Sommeregg we hike on in a south-westerly direction to the crossways below the Protestant Church in Unterhaus. The Seebodn experience hiking trail leads due south along the Wirlsdorfer Bach stream to the main road, which is crossed at the roundabout. We turn west for 200 metres and finally hike again along the Wirlsdorfer Bach into Klinger Park am See.

Variant: from Bachlwirt take Kochstraße to the Information Centre.
