On this stage you will walk across the Austrian border for the first time: from Carinthia you will come to Slovenia via the Karawanken Mountains. The destination of today’s stage, Krajnska Gora, lies at the entrance to the Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps.

The Baumgartnerhöhe, near the Finkenstein castle arena and high above Lake Faaker See, forms the starting point for this stage along the national border. After a good two hours’ walk you will come to the Jepca Saddle and thus the Austrian-Slovenian border. After spending some time walking along the southern Karawanken you can enjoy the view of the idyllic mountain village of Kranjska Gora, which is the centre of skiing in Slovenia (Alpine skiing and World Cup races, plus cross-country skiing) and the ideal starting point for hiking and cycling tours in summer.

Kranjska Gora is a crossing point – if you go through the Vršič Pass you will come to the Soča Valley and then to the sea, or to Tarvisio in Italy, and via the Wurzen Pass you will come to Villach in Austria. Kranjska Gora is the ideal place to relax and recharge your batteries in summer and in winter, with an extensive range of active enjoyment such as hiking, Nordic walking and cycle tours. There are beautiful natural areas waiting to be discovered in and around the Triglav National Park.

Destination

Kranjska Gora

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Baumgartnerhöhe (919 metres) we follow hiking trail no. 682. This runs partly along the forest road, and parts of it can be shortened by using the steep hiking paths. We go past the former customs hut and at 1,438 metres we reach Slovenia via the Jepca Saddle. We can see the Mittagskogel (2,139 metres) on our left. We go to the west of the Suhi rift valley as far as the Planina Brdca (an Alpine lodge) and from there the trail leads in a westerly direction between the Tislerica and Laskovc mountains, before continuing in a south westerly direction down to Srednji Vrh. Our route then continues on to Frtalez, and then we follow the River Sava as far as Kranjska Gora.

The view along this stretch is repeatedly striking, and Srednji Vrh is truly magical. On the stretch from Srednji Vrh down into the valley we come across a small chapel, which was built in memory of a girl who died here when she was struck by lightning.

Dear Lore, there are no huts or lodges or anything on this stage, until you come to the valley, to the village of Gozd Martuljek. From there you have less than one hour to the end of the stage in Kranjska Gora, where you have everything: bars, restaurants, shops, etc. Enjoy your hike, kind regards, Boštjan

An impressive stage. Walking on the border crest of Austria and Slovenia was great. Beautiful views from the cross on top. It was a long and tough downhill for me.
