A visit to the motorcycle country of Carinthia is always an experience. Last but not least, it is the impressive panoramic roads that attract us motorcycle riders to the three-country region AUT-SLO-ITA. The Villacher Alpenstraße and the Goldeck-Panoramastraße are two of the five mountain passes in Carinthia, which are also integrated into the Panoramastrasse Ticket Kärnten.

Turn-by-turn directions

The city in which we start today is a real gem: Villach, beautifully situated in the border triangle Austria, Italy, Slovenia, is considered one of the most attractive cities in Austria with its old buildings, its mild climate and its sunny cafés. That's why we strongly advise you to take a spin through Villach's historic center before jumping into the motorcycle saddle. Or how about a visit to the Villach Automuseum, which shows over 4,000 square meters more than 250 old cars?

So, now but finally turn the key, put the first gear, and off it goes. First in a good trot along the Ossiacher See. Castle Landskron greets from the right. High above it towers over the water and offers next to a castle café a postcard-ready view of the Ossiacher See. Carinthia's third largest lake is partly under nature conservation, shows in addition to flora and fauna but also worth seeing culture such as the Ossiach Abbey in the same place. In Feldkirchen we turn left on the B 95. The pretty Feldkirchen is always worth a stop or at least a lap in the motorcycle saddle. The "church in the field" was created in the 8./9 century. It has a rich arsenal of historic buildings such as churches, town houses and noble residences. The B 95 northwest surprised with varied route, grippy surface and quite acceptable curve density. At Döbriach, the route leaves the state-owned asphalt, grazes the Millstätter See and makes it into the Drautal. Then the first driving highlight of the day builds up in front of the driver - the Goldeck panoramic road.

Its construction is closely linked to the development of the Goldeck ski area south of Spittal. Anyone climbing the 14.5-kilometer route from Zlan to an altitude of 1,895 meters today can hardly imagine with what primitive means the workers used to hit this daring route into the rock. The reward for this effort is ten perfectly developed hairpin bends, ten percent incline and magnificent views. If the road leads through dense mountain forest at the beginning, it gives you more beautiful views of the Millstätter Alpe, the Millstätter See, the Gailtal Alps, the Karawanken and the Drautal. Back in Zlan, we wave on small side roads in the Gailtal over. This is where Windische Höhe comes into play. Narrow and bumpy, it climbs to 1,100 meters, where it does not necessarily have to be windy. For earlier here was the German-Slovenian language border, and Windisch is the historical German name for the Slovene language.

In Nötsch we cross the valley of the Gail, behind Maglern the border to Italy and approach Tarvisio where four languages are spoken (Italian, German, Friulainisch and Slovene) and afloat the Julian Alps. Alps? Sounds like curve fun. And that's exactly what the stage gives us to Slovenia. At Lago del Predil, she turns to the pass of the same name on Slovenian territory and immediately delivers a handful of jagged curves. Once at the top, the Mangartstraße awaits a twelve-kilometer delicacy that narrows adventurously and through five dark tunnels at 2,056 meters. An absolute must!

As previously curvy, it then goes through the beautiful Triglav National Park to the 1,611-meter-high Vršič Pass and its notorious paved hairpin bends. However, these are the smallest problem if you have mastered this with a total of 48 hairpin-spanned passport to here. As long as the cobblestones are dry and no cow blocks the way, it goes on with pleasure towards the north. That the small Kranjska Gora is a great winter sports resort, can not be overlooked: surrounded by mighty two and a half thousand with white peaks, his houses seem to flow along the Wurzener Save. What a panorama. Continue to the Wurzenpass, whose 1,073 meter high saddle is reached on perfectly developed roadway afloat. You should definitely stop at the memorial and at the Russian tank at the border crossing, reminiscent of the darkest chapter of the multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia. Down to Gailtal, over to Villach and into the icing on the cake of this tour is it now. This is called Villacher Alpenstraße and is 16.5 kilometers long. The first meters begin in the Villach district Möltschach. As a result, the road overcomes 1,200 vertical meters and throws us a total of 116 turns and bends in front of the front wheel. Right at the beginning, it circles uphill in several serpentines, before presenting wide views of Villach, the Julian Alps and the Karawanken Mountains. Then it follows the demolition edge of the distinctive ridge, until it leads beyond the tree line over alpine meadows to Rosstratte, where the view waits for the summit of the 2.166 meter high Dobratsch.  You can not finish a day's tour well, as now back in the direction of accommodation quarters.
