Der Name Zirbitzkogel leitet sich nicht, wie vielfach angenommen wird, von den im Gebiet wachsenden Zirben ab, sondern vom slowenischen "zirbitza", das mit Rote Alm übersetzt werden kann und auf die häufig vorkommende Rostblättrige Alpenrose (im Volksmund- Almrausch) hinweist. Aufgebaut ist der Zirbitzkogel aus kristallinem Gestein- Schiefer,Gneise und Granite herrschen vor.
