The initial part of the tour ist along an groomed winter walking trail. From Hüttecksattel mountain saddle you then walk through forest and over snow-covered alpine meadows up to Rossfeld. To the top of Hochwurzen you take Gipfelbahn Hochwurzen cable-car to the starting point at Hochwurzenhütte chalet, which is one of two refreshment stops besides Hochwurzenalm chalet. The winter scenery on Hochwurzen and the summit of Rossfeld is breathtaking!

Author’s recommendation

  • For those you want to extend the tour, we recommand to walk south to the peak of Guschen (additional walking time of 1.5 to 2 hour both ways).
  • From December until March the tourist office Schladming offers guided snow shoe  tours every Thursday.

Safety information

Before each and every ski tour or snow shoe walk you should check the most recent avalanche warnings which can be found at www.lawine-steiermark.at.

In winter time it is therefore important to also be careful on supposedly easy walks. Sections that are in the shadows can easily get icy, and slopes on the side of the trail may have avalanche hazard. Mountain sport is always carried out under personal responsibility - in winter even more than in summer. Tourist offices or avalanche warning services do not take any responsibility in respect to information provided.
